A Senior Magistrates’ court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has discharged four motorists charged with driving without number plates.
Those discharged are; Timothy Ohaegbu, 40, Joseph Zira, 40, Odina Vachi, 26, and Sunday Emmanuel, 30.
The Magistrate, Mrs Folashade Oyekan, discharged them after they were arraigned by the police.
“I am discharging them because there is no punishment for an offence like driving without a number plate.
“The Section 17 of the Road Traffic Act, which you are charging these four under, is for those who drive without particulars or recent documents.
“The police should try and educate the motorists on the right thing to do. You can caution anybody driving without number plates and make them know why they should get it,” she said.
She later ordered the police to release the accused persons’ cars in their custody with immediate effect, and struck out the charges.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Mr Francis Tanko, had told the court that SP Adiku Joseph arrested the accused persons on the Olusegun Obasanjo Way by Hali brothers Junction, Wuse Zone 1, Abuja.
He said that the four accused drove their cars within the FCT without number plates and the offence contravened the Provision of Section 17 of Road Traffic Act. (NAN)
