The Niger State Chief Judge, Justice Aliyu Mayaki has frowned at 2006 numbers of awaiting trial inmates in the correctional centre languishing in its custody due to lack of synergy between the ministry of justice and police legal department in the state.
He made the observation Monday when he paid visit to the Old Correctional Centre, Minna for his annual decongestion program, saying that any inmate without proper records or credible evidence against them will be set free.
Justice Mayaki explained that the centre should be for correctional measure to leave a better life not to be contrary noted that the synergy between the ministry and police investigation department will ensure quick dispensation of justice.
He hinted that dumping suspects in the custody for mere allegations was unacceptable called for attitudinal change by authorities to suit the federal government policy on correctional center that is commendable.
At the time of visit the centre has 263 current inmates awaiting trial and 92 convicted, report revealed that some of the inmates have been in the custody for over six years awaiting trial.
The Director Public Prosecution DPP, Barrister Moses Chiroma decried non release of overheads to the ministry known as a service oriented one have been denied funds to carry out its functions effectively especially on case transfers and other mandates.
CJ however urged the ministry to formally write its request for urgent attention to ensure cases are heard in the appropriate environment to ensure fair justice prevails hence it is unlawful to continue to retain them without trail making the centre over crowded unnecessarily.
