Women for Peace in Nigeria (WOPIN), a non governmental organization, has concluded plans to embark on a peace campaign project throughout the nation towards ensuring peaceful elections that will be devoid of violence and bloodletting.
This was made known in a press conference in Abuja yesterday by the National President of the group, Maryam Abdulahi, who said the association is determined to pursue vigorously its peace project tagged “knock, knock for peace project”, where peace counsellors will be knocking on million doors to preach peaceful co existence and tolerance among Nigerians.
Abdullahi, who noted that the peace campaign is in line with the objectives of the organisation in peace building, said about one thousand volunteers and peace counsellors will be trained on the rudiments and techniques of peace education, mediation, conflict management and counselling as well as social media to propagate peace and publicise messages of peace and harmony.
The national president explained that the group’s strategy will include mobilising members, volunteers, peace counsellors and advocates who will go house to house and knock while talking on the need for peace. She noted that “It is our believe that if families are peaceful, we will have a nation, free of hostility, mistrust, hatred and violence “
Abdullahi, who is also a delegate of the just concluded National constitutional conference, disclosed that the association had just concluded a 21 days fasting and prayer for the peace of the country and the release of the chibok girls, adding that it has instructed its members to continue to pray for the peaceful conduct of the 2015 elections and for the restoration of peace in the troubled north east.
