Argentina players celebrating their victory

Defending world champions Argentina advanced to the World Cup 2026 quarter-finals on Tuesday following a breathtaking 3-2 victory over Egypt at the Atlanta Stadium.
Lionel Scaloni’s side overturned a shocking two-goal deficit with just over 20 minutes remaining to break Egyptian hearts in arguably the most extraordinary match of the tournament so far.
Egypt, under the guidance of Hossam Hassan, uncoiled a perfectly orchestrated game plan early on to leave the world champions shell-shocked. In the 15th minute, Yasser Ibrahim silenced the largely pro-Argentine crowd by powering home a magnificent header from Marwan Attia’s corner kick.
Argentina’s trouble worsened just five minutes later. After Haissem Hassan brought down Nicolás Tagliafico inside the box, Lionel Messi stepped up to take the penalty. However, Egypt’s breakout goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir guessed correctly, diving spectacularly to his left to deny the legendary captain.
The second half delivered unremitting drama. Egypt believed they had doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Mostafa Ziko finished off a rapid counter-attack. However, following a rigorous VAR check, French referee François Letexier ruled the goal out due to a foul committed by Attia in the build-up.The reprieve for Argentina was short-lived.
In the 67th minute, Egypt replicated their devastating transitional play. Mohamed Salah spearheaded the break and picked out Haissem Hassan, who delivered a razor-sharp ball across the face of the goal for Ziko to smash home from six yards out, putting the underdogs ahead 2-0.
Staring down a historic exit, the reigning champions launched a furious late assault. The lifeline arrived in the 79th minute when Tottenham defender Cristian Romero leaped highest to nod in a pinpoint delivery from Messi. Four minutes later, Messi redeemed his earlier penalty failure in trademark fashion. Seizing a loose ball at the edge of the penalty area, the 39-year-old unleashed a fierce strike that flew past Shobeir to level the match at 2-2.
With that goal, Messi became the first player in football history to score in six consecutive World Cup knockout stage matches.
Seven minutes of additional time were announced, the match dissolved into a chaotic, end-to-end spectacle. Egypt vehemently appealed for a penalty at one end, claiming Alexis Mac Allister had handled Hamdy Fathy to the ground. The referee waved play on, allowing Argentina to instantly counter-attack. Lautaro Martínez burst down the right wing and floated a cross toward the back post. Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández anticipated the flight perfectly, rising high to cushion a dramatic 92nd-minute header into the top corner.
Furious protests from the Egyptian bench resulted in multiple bookings, including a yellow card for Shobeir and a red card for an Egyptian team official, but the goal stood. Argentina held on through the remaining tense minutes to seal an iconic comeback.
Argentina will now travel to Houston to face the winner of the round-of-16 clash between Switzerland and Colombia in the quarter-finals.
