President Bola Ahmed Tinubu currently has the strongest strategic pathway to securing re-election in 2027, despite growing opposition forces led by Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, according to a new report by ADSC META.
The report, signed by Sir Victor Walsh Oluwafemi, President and Chief Executive Officer of ADSC META, examined Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with emphasis on governance performance, political structures, coalition dynamics, voter behaviour, economic indicators, institutional influence and leadership capacity.
It identified Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peter Obi of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), and Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as three major personalities shaping the emerging presidential contest.
According to the report, Tinubu’s advantage is largely driven by incumbency, political organisation, institutional reach and his established capacity to build and manage broad-based political coalitions.
“Following an extensive review of governance performance, political structures, coalition dynamics, voter behaviour, economic indicators, institutional influence, and leadership capacity, ADSC META finds that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presently maintains the strongest pathway towards securing a second term in office,” the report stated.
The organisation stressed that its assessment was not based on political preference but on a comparative analysis of the political environment as it currently exists.
It described the power of incumbency as “perhaps the most significant advantage” available to Tinubu, noting that incumbent leaders generally enjoy greater visibility, access to state institutions, policy influence, media attention and national presence than opposition candidates.
The report also credited Tinubu with extensive political experience and coalition-building capacity, recalling his role in the political realignment that culminated in the formation of the APC.
According to ADSC META, the governing party has established structures across the federation, including governors, legislators, local government networks, political stakeholders, traditional institutions and strategic alliances.
“These structures provide a formidable electoral foundation,” it stated.
Economic Challenges
The report, however, acknowledged that the Tinubu administration continues to face significant economic and political challenges.
It cited persistent inflation, rising food prices, the impact of fuel subsidy removal and the initial uncertainty surrounding exchange-rate reforms as issues contributing to public frustration.
It said the administration’s major electoral challenge would be whether its economic reforms begin to deliver visible benefits to Nigerians before the final phase of the 2027 election cycle.
“If inflation declines, infrastructure delivery improves, foreign investment increases, employment opportunities expand, and economic confidence strengthens, the administration may successfully transform what currently appears to be political liabilities into electoral advantages,” the report said.
Obi: Popularity Versus Political Structure
On Peter Obi, ADSC META described the former Anambra State governor as one of the most compelling political figures in Nigeria’s contemporary political landscape.
It identified his reputation for fiscal prudence, administrative discipline, accountability and modest leadership style as key factors behind his strong appeal among young voters, professionals, entrepreneurs, members of the diaspora community and Nigerians seeking an alternative model of governance.
“His greatest political asset remains credibility,” the report stated.
However, the organisation said Obi’s major challenge was converting his considerable popularity and movement-driven support into a nationwide electoral structure.
It noted that presidential elections require extensive grassroots mobilisation, nationwide political penetration, coalition management, vote-protection mechanisms and organisational capacity across thousands of wards and polling units.
“The challenge confronting Peter Obi is not visibility. The challenge is conversion,” the report stated.
Atiku: Experience and National Reach
The report also acknowledged Atiku Abubakar’s extensive political experience and national reach, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most experienced political figures.
It identified his key strengths as executive experience, national reach, political relationships, economic policy familiarity and long-standing engagement with national politics.
However, ADSC META noted that his repeated presidential contests could present a challenge, particularly among younger voters increasingly demanding generational renewal and alternative leadership.
Opposition Unity Could Change the Race
ADSC META identified opposition cohesion as one of the most critical variables capable of determining the direction of the 2027 election.
According to the report, a fragmented opposition would strengthen Tinubu’s position by dispersing votes, weakening organisational efficiency and reducing the likelihood of a single formidable national alternative emerging.
“Conversely, a disciplined and united opposition coalition could substantially alter the political landscape,” it warned.
The report further compared the leadership strengths of the three major contenders.
It said Tinubu’s strengths were most evident in political organisation, coalition building, strategic negotiation and institutional management.
Obi’s strengths, it said, were fiscal discipline, administrative efficiency, public accountability and reform-oriented governance, while Atiku’s strengths included executive experience, economic policy familiarity and national political engagement.
It nevertheless stressed that competence alone does not determine electoral victory.
“Elections are not won solely by competence. They are won through a combination of competence, structure, alliances, timing, public sentiment, and organisational strength,” the report stated.
Tinubu Remains Candidate to Beat
Based on its assessment of incumbency, party structure, coalition capacity, political organisation, institutional reach and electoral preparedness, ADSC META concluded that Tinubu currently occupies the strongest strategic position among the leading contenders.
It, however, cautioned against interpreting the assessment as a declaration of an inevitable victory.
“Elections remain dynamic. Economic conditions can change. Political alliances can shift. New coalitions can emerge. Public opinion can evolve rapidly,” the report noted.
It added that the opposition still had opportunities to redefine the political contest before Nigerians go to the polls.
“Nevertheless, when measured against the realities of incumbency, party structure, coalition capacity, political organisation, institutional reach, and electoral preparedness, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu currently occupies the strongest strategic position among the leading contenders,” ADSC META stated.
“As matters stand today, the incumbent remains the candidate to beat.”
