A traditional ruler in Benue State, Ter Tyosin 11 Chief Daniel Abomtse has disclosed that over 310 persons have been killed and 13 persons injured in 39 attacks by suspected herdsmen in Gwer West local government area between February 2011 to April 2019.
Chief Abomtse who made the startling disclosure during a courtesy visit on him by the State Working Committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Benue State Council in his palace at Naka, said his subjects are still languishing in pains and tears and wondered why some people from elsewhere would come to his domain in the name of grazing only to kill, maim and occupy.
Chief Abomtse said the continued attacks and ravaging of Benue communities by the herders called for concerted efforts by all to address the issue.
He challenged the new executive of the Union to leave legacies behind for others to emulate, noted that the Union needs a conducive environment to operate, saying if Journalists fail in their duty, the whole world will collapse.
Earlier in her address, the State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Victoria Asher, said they were in his palace to condole with the Ter Tyoshin over the frequent attacks on his people by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
Comrade Asher who prayed God to give the traditional ruler the wisdom of King Solomon to rule over his people encouraged him not to relent in his efforts at resisting the invasion and takeover of the people’s ancestral land by the suspected fulani herders.
The NUJ chairman assured him that the Union will continue to partner with his palace in the area of publicity to attract attention to the plight of his people and urged him not to forget his root, the Journalism profession.
