Light students of the University of Maiduguri yesterday died in a fatal motor accident while five others sustained injuries along Lamari – Sade villages of Darazo local government area of Bauchi state.
It was gathered that the deceased were nursing students of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, who were travelling to Abuja for a fellowship of Christian Worship Conference.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Mohammed Haruna, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, said that the accident occurred at 2:00pm on Wednesday, when a convoy of three buses conveying UniMaid students and School of Nursing, UMTH, to Abuja for a Christian Worship conference was involved in the fatal accident.
According to him, “The driver of the one of buses, in an attempt to avert head to head collusion lost control and crushed on an incoming bus leading to the death of eight of the occupants of the bus while five of them sustained injuries.”
Haruna said when the Police visited the scene of the accident, they rushed the victims to the General Hospital, Darazo for treatment but were later referred to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital.
In a related development, about four policemen attached to the Ilesha-Baruba Divisional Police headquarters in Kwara state lost their lives on Wednesday night, in an accident involving a truck and the station’s patrol vehicle.
An eyewitness account revealed that the truck was coming from Chikanda, a Nigeria-Benin, community in the Baruten local government area of Kwara state, carrying cattle that were to be sold at Ilesha market yesterday before it collided with the incoming patrol van.
Our correspondent learnt that the truck, while trying to dodge a pothole in Ilesha, allegedly collided with the patrol van less than 10 minutes that it left the station.
A reliable source, who preferred anonymity, said that the incident, which happened at 9:15 p.m. saw three of the four occupants of the vehicle died on the spot.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Kwara Police, ASP Ajayi Okasanmi Command confirmed the incident but claimed that he was yet to be briefed on the number of casualties, adding that the driver of the truck was still on the run as he had fled the scene.
