$9.6bn debt judgment: Court grants ex-petroleum ministry director N10m bail

A former Director, Legal Services of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Grace Taiga, was yesterday granted N10million bail by a federal capital territory high court sitting in Apo.
The accused is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Clime Commission (EFCC) on a criminal charges connected with the controversial P&ID $9.6bn judgment.
Justice Olukayode Adeniyi had on September 20, 2019, ordered her remand in Suleja prison in Niger State, after the defendant pleaded not guilty to the eight counts of the charges.
At the resumed trial, counsel to the defendant, Ola Olanipekun SAN, moved her bail application, asking the court to grant his client bail.
Reacting, the prosecution opposed the bail application moved by the defence.
However, the trial judge, Justice Adeniyi granting her bail, said he had the discretion to grant bail to the defendant.
He held that the prosecution failed to convince her not to grant the bail.
He then granted her bail in the sum of N10m with two sureties in like sum.
On the conditions for bail, the court held that the sureties to be produced by the defendant must include public servants not below directorate level and must be resident in Abuja.
Insisting that the sureties are to depose to an affidavit of means, he added that the defendant must not travel outside Nigeria without the court’s permission.
