Rep commends Buhari over NEDC Bill, Lake Chad Charter

The Chairman of the House Committee on Lake Chad, Rep Sabo Garba has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing into law, the North East Development Commission, (NEDC).
Speaking to Newsmen, the lawmaker also hailed the president for earlier ratifying the Lake Chad Charter.
“We are extremely happy to receive the good news that Mr. President has appended his signature to the North East Development Commission (NEDC) Bill thus establishing the NEDC”.
” I must also acknowledge with great pleasure and satisfaction the positive disposition of the Federal Government towards the Lake Chad area in particular and the North East geo-political zone in general.
NEDC, he said will help in fast tracking the process of reconstruction of the devastated region.
Rep Garba who is also the president of the Regional Parliamentary Commottee of Lake Chad member Countries, said “the Charter between Nigeria, Cameroun, Central African Republic, Libya and the Republic of Chad will further boost socioeconomic and security co-operation among the member nations”.

He noted that the reduction in size of the Lake Chad has further aggravated the suffering of the people around the area, adding that the commitment of the heads of governments of the Lake Chad Basin Member Countries will help in creating governance policies for the management of trans-boundary water resources.

The Chairman assured that the National Assembly will continue to come up with legislative framework that will give legal backing to government policies and actions that will help in recharging the Lake Chad and reclaiming the receded areas and the ecosystem.

Hon. Sabo Garba who represents Nangere/ Potiskum Federal Constituency of Yobe State stressed the need for more Executive-Legislative synergy and co-operation to save the means of livelihood of over 30 million people living around the Lake Chad Basin.

” Our committee was established with a mandate towards supporting the Lake Chad Basin commission ( LCBC) as sub-regional body responsible for the integrated management of the Lake Chad Basin resources in particular and facilitating regional peace, co-operation and security in the nation; and we are committed to this task”, Hon. Garba assured
