The minister of youth and sports development, Sunday dare has disclosed that the ministry will not work with the suspended Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN President, Ibrahim Gusau, describing him as a ‘Renegade’ and his faction, “autonomous group”
The minister stated this on Saturday when the acting president of the AFN, George Olamide paid him a visit.
Mr Dare further stressed that the ministry will partner with Olamide’s led AFN to ensure that athletes are paid their allowances once verified.
“Acting AFN President Olamide George in Dec. 2019 dropped by my office at Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports to share plans. The FMYS will partner with them and not any renegade or “autonomous” group. We will partner to ensure Athletes are paid their allowances once verified,” he said on twitter.
Embattled AFN president Gusau was in November last year suspended from office following alleged disobedience and refusal to act on instruction by the former minister of youth and sports, Solomon Dalung to relieve Sunday Adeleye, former Technical Director of the federation, of his duties.
Mr Gusau was also accused of mismanaging $135, 000 grant mistakingly sent to the federation by the IAAF now World Athletics.
There is also another case of unaccounted $150, 000 which the acting president, Mr Olamide recently set up a panel to investigate the ‘missing’ money.
Mr Gusau’s faction, after his suspension, held a congress in Akwa, Anambra state where the group, in a press release stated they are no longer subordinate to the ministry of youth and sports and declared itself an “autonomous Federation”
