Worried by the incessant clashes which resulted to killings of both herdsmen and farmers, the Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) in-charge of Operations, Force Headquarters, Michael Zuokumor yesterday held a reconciliation meeting with the warring parties in Southern Kaduna, with the aim of proffering solution to the crisis.
The DIG, who was accompanied by commissioner of Police in the state, Shehu Umar, during a closed door meeting, said the essence of the meeting was to reconcile the herdsmen and farmers who have been at logger-heads for some time now, and to set up a committee among the people, especially the youth of the area.
He said, “The farmers and their representatives and the herdsmen met to resolve their differences but were quickly reconciled; because they have been looking for the opportunity to reconcile with one another.
“We want to tell the whole world that these people have agreed to put an end to their differences. We also set up peace committee comprised of the DIG, Assistant DIG, and Commissioner of police and leaders of the parties involved.
“We are also going to set up another committee among the youth of the Kaura community on how to see one another as brothers.”
The state governor, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero also urged the Police Committee on Peace, Security and Reconciliation of Farmers and Herdsmen, being chaired by the DIG to actively engage locals in carrying out their assignment.
Speaking when the committee paid him a courtesy call, Governor Yero said it is only through active interaction with those directly affected that the panel can identify the true causes as well as solutions to the crises.
