One Abdullaziza Musa, has escaped from a court cell after being sentenced to six months imprisonment for trespass and robbery, by a Grade 1 Area court, at Karshi, in Abuja.
The 20-year old convict, the son of an Inspector of Police (name withheld) with the Force Headquarters in Abuja, who arrested and handed him over to the police for prosecution.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the convict broke the burglary-proof iron of the court cell and escaped through the ceiling.
He did this while the prosecutor was making necessary arrangements to transport him (the convict) to the Keffi prison, in Nasarawa State.
The presiding judge, Mr. Abdullahi Abdullahi, had earlier sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal trespass and robbery.
The judge however gave the convict an option of paying N11, 000 as fine.
The police prosecutor, Cpl. Pascal Njoku, during the proceeding, had told the court that the accused and two others now at large robbed one Mrs. Rabi Bala of her household belongings.
Njoku said the accused, of Angwan Sarki, Orozo, Abuja, broke into the complainant’s house at midnight, tied her legs, hands and mouth and made away with the belongings.
He said those stolen items the complainant could remember include an LG flat television set valued at N68, 000, and two Techno phones valued at N16, 000.
The prosecutor said Musa also made away with a box kit containing perfumes and a sum of N7, 000.
He further stated that the complainant lodged a report at the police station in Karshi, where the accused was later arrested through the help of his father.
Njoku said the convict’s father, as a law-abiding citizen and an Inspector of Police with the Force Headquarters in Abuja, handed over his son to the police.
The prosecutor said the convict, after his arrest, had led a team of police officers to an uncompleted building close to the complainant’s house.
“It was from here some of the stolen properties were recovered,’’ he said.
Njoku had also told the court that the offence was punishable under sections 243 and 287 of the Penal code respectively. (NAN)
