The Police have arraigned two traders, Ibrahim Abdullahi, 25, and Tahiru Mohammed, 20, in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ court, Abuja, for allegedly beating up a fellow trader, causing grievous hurt.
The Police Prosecutor, Cpl Babangida Joseph, told the court that on July 9, one Fati Mohammed, of Canopy Market, Wuse Zone 3, reported the two accused at the Wuse Zone 3 Police Station.
He said that the complainant had reported that the accused persons, who were also traders in same market, formed a common intention with one Rabiu and beat her up.
According to Joseph, the accused persons alongside and Rabiu, who is now at large beat up the complainant and injured her sister, Rashidat Isah, who was trying to stop the fight.
He said that the accused persons were standing trial for the offences of joint act and causing hurt which contravened sections 79 and 245 of the Penal Code.
The prosecutor said that if found guilty as charged, they would be punished with imprisonment for a term which might extend to three years or with fine or with both.
However, the two accused who pleaded guilty to the crime, told the court that Rabiu had parked a car in front of the complainant’s shop and they warned him that the complainant would not allow such.
They explained to the court that instead of the complainant listening to them, she started fighting them.
According to the accused persons, they fought back in self defence, which led to the injuries on the complainant’s sister.
The Senior Magistrate, Mr. Celestine Odoh, granted the accused persons bail on the grounds that they had a reason for their action, which was self defence
According to Odoh, the court cannot go ahead to convict an accused person if they have a cause for their action.
He, however, granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N50, 000 each with one surety each in like sum who must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
He said that both the accused persons and the sureties must enter into a bond in the same amount.
Odoh adjourned the matter until August 11 for hearing and the defence of the accused persons. (NAN)
