In diverse communities like Kaduna State, sports have emerged as a powerful tool for promoting peaceful coexistence among individuals of different tribes, cultures, and backgrounds.
During a three-day workshop on “Sport for Development” in Kaduna, Coach Usman Haruna Ilerika emphasized this point.
The workshop was supported by the PEACECORE project, an initiative of GIZ funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
According to Coach Ilerika, sports can foster teamwork, mutual respect, and understanding, helping to break down barriers and reduce prejudice. This, in turn, contributes to a more harmonious and united society.
He noted that sports possess a unique ability to bring people together, transcending differences in tribe, culture, and language. When individuals from various backgrounds come together to participate in sports, they build relationships, develop trust, and foster a sense of community.
Coach Ilerika highlighted that activities such as football, volleyball, and other sports can be utilized to unite people and promote peaceful coexistence. “Teams composed of players from different tribes help break down barriers and promote understanding,” he said.
He also emphasized that cultural exhibitions and sports events can be combined to enhance unity and celebrate diversity.
He pointed out that it is essential to ensure that individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can participate in sports programs. Using neutral venues can help prevent bias and promote a sense of fairness. Awarding prizes for peace and unity can further reinforce positive values.
“Youth are a crucial demographic for sports initiatives aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence. By involving young people in sports, we help them develop critical life skills such as teamwork, communication, and conflict resolution.
“Sports programs facilitate connections among youth from different backgrounds, promoting a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives. These initiatives equip youth with the skills and values necessary to promote peace and resolve conflicts.”
