The 2026 South-East Basketball Tournament earlier scheduled to hold from May 15 to 16 has been postponed following the rescheduling of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Men’s Premier League, which dunks off this weekend.
Organisers said the postponement became necessary because several coaches and players from the South-East are involved with Coal City Blazers, the region’s only representative in the elite league.
Coal City Blazers, Co owned by the Chief Executive Officer of Afasports and South-East representative on the NBBF board, Mr Ugo Udezue, are expected to carry the hopes of the region in the national competition.
Officials disclosed that players and members of the technical crew of the Enugu-based side have intensified preparations ahead of the league campaign, expressing confidence in the team’s readiness to compete favourably against other top clubs in the country.
Head Coach Chiedozi Nwoye expressed optimism over the team’s chances, assuring supporters that the players are prepared to give a good account of themselves throughout the season.
He noted that the team remained focused despite the busy schedule, adding that the experience from the Premier League would further enhance the development of basketball in the South-East.
Meanwhile, organisers of the South-East Basketball Tournament said a new date for the championship would be announced after consultations with stakeholders and participating teams.
