Players and officials of Nigeria Premier Football League side Rivers United sustained injuries on Thursday after the club’s team bus was involved in a road accident in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The incident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt while the team was travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for its President Federation Cup Round of 16 clash against Nasarawa United.
In a statement issued by the club, Rivers United confirmed that several players and officials suffered minor injuries in the crash but assured supporters that no fatalities or life-threatening injuries were recorded.
“The safety, health and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority. We can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported,” the club stated.
The club added that all affected persons were receiving medical attention and were in stable condition.
Rivers United also expressed appreciation to supporters and members of the football community for their concern and prayers, noting that further updates on the team’s travel plans and the Federation Cup fixture would be communicated in due course.
The Port Harcourt-based club secured a place in the Round of 16 after edging Rangers International 3-2 and was scheduled to face Nasarawa United on Saturday in Awka.
The Federation Cup represents Rivers United’s last opportunity to win silverware this season after finishing second in the NPFL standings, one point behind league champions Rangers International.
