The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is scheduled to deliver the convocation lecture at the 36th convocation ceremony of his alma mater, the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), this Saturday.
The announcement was made public on Thursday in a statement issued by Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media.
Wike will be addressing graduating students, academics, and guests on the topic: “Leadership and Infrastructure Development in Nigeria: Lesson for future leaders.”
The event is slated to take place at 10:00 AM at the New Convocation Arena, University of Port Harcourt, Choba, Rivers State.
The official invitation, extended via a letter dated April 20, 2026, and signed by UNIPORT’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari A. Georgewill, praised the Minister’s long-standing track record in public service.
”Your Excellency’s distinguished record of service to our nation, your exemplary leadership, and your enduring contributions to governance, infrastructural development, and public administration stand as a testament to visionary statesmanship,” Professor Georgewill wrote.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the convocation lecture serves as a vital academic milestone and a platform for figures of global and national repute to engage the university community on critical issues shaping national progress.
He added that Wike’s presence would serve as a powerful source of motivation for students stepping into the professional world.
In a formal acceptance letter dated April 23, 2026, signed by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Chidi Amadi, the FCT Minister confirmed his attendance and detailed the inspiration behind his chosen topic.
According to the statement, Wike selected the theme out of a deep-seated conviction that true leadership must be measured by visible results.
According to the statement, the Minister intends to emphasize that effective governance must translate into tangible advancements—specifically through the aggressive deployment of critical infrastructure, social services, and public amenities that directly elevate the living standards of everyday citizens.
Wike, a prominent alumnus of the institution, is widely recognized for his heavy focus on infrastructural transformation, a reputation built during his two terms as Governor of Rivers State and sustained in his current role overseeing the development of Nigeria’s capital city.
