Court Remands Sowore in Kuje Prison Over Alleged Defamatory Post Against Tinubu

Date:

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application for a stay of proceedings.

Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order after dismissing Sowore’s application seeking his recusal from the case over allegations of bias.

The court fixed June 24 for the hearing of Sowore’s motion seeking a stay of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued for his arrest.

The application was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).
Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, arrived at the court accompanied by supporters carrying placards.

The court had on June 16 revoked the bail earlier granted to him after he failed to appear for trial. Justice Umar also granted an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), and issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by describing him as “a criminal” in posts published on his X and Facebook accounts.
