Six killed in Sunday’s Terrorists Attack on Guga in Katsina State

Six people, comprising five hunters and one local vigilante, have died following hours of exchange of gunfire with hundreds of terrorists who attacked Guga in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State on Sunday.

Residents said the terrorists, about three hundred in number, riding over a hundred motorcycles, approached the community through the main Bakori-Guga road from Magoje Village, which served as their base.

A resident, Mahadi Danbinta, however, said the bravery of hunters and local vigilantes, and the prompt response of security agencies prevented the terrorists from overrunning the town.

“The attack started at about 17:30 hours with unprecedented brutal force and ferocity that spelled devilish intent, which our gallant CJTF hunters countered with a display of invincible bravery that resulted in holding and stopping the terrorists from entering the main town.

“The army from Mabai started their assault with superior gunpower. Later, another batch of military and airforce personnel from Bakori arrived in Guga after neutralizing and eliminating the ambush laid by the bandits at Dawan La’ila.

“The combined efforts of the airforce, military, police, CJTF, CWATCH, and local vigilante groups successfully repelled the attack.

“M1any terrorists were eliminated, motorcycles and rifles were captured, and two boxes of ammunition were abandoned by the terrorists in their haste to escape,” a resident,  Mahadi Danbinta said.

He said that the community has buried the local vigilante, Idris Ibrahim, popularly known as Babawo, while the remains of the five hunters have been deposited at the mogue awaiting final decision on where to bury them.

The hunters serve directly under the command of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Meanwhile, the state commissioner of internal security and home affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu said troops killed more than 40 of the terrorists during the attack.

He said in a statement that the attack was led by the notorious kingpin Idi Abasu Aiki and supported by members of the Ado Aleru group from neighbouring Zamfara State.

According to him, about eight senior terrorist commanders were among those eliminated while their leader, Idi Abasu Aiki  reportedly sustained life-threatening gunshot injuries.

Mu’azu said normalcy has been fully restored in the affected communities and reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
