2027: INEC to set up polling units in Plateau IDP camps

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to conduct the 2027 general elections in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps across Plateau State to ensure that displaced citizens are not denied their constitutional right to vote.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Plateau State, Prof. Sam Egwu, disclosed this on Wednesday during a one-day workshop on electoral security and capacity building held in Jos.
According to Egwu, the commission has drawn lessons from previous elections and is determined to ensure that conflict-induced displacement does not prevent eligible voters from participating in the electoral process.
He explained that INEC was already making the necessary arrangements for elections to be held in IDP camps during the 2027 polls.
The REC, however, acknowledged that insecurity remains one of the major challenges to election management in Plateau, particularly in communities affected by communal violence and banditry.
Egwu said the electoral body was working closely with security agencies, traditional institutions and civil society organisations to develop measures that would guarantee peaceful, transparent and credible elections.
He also stressed the importance of training election personnel and other stakeholders, noting that adequate knowledge of the security environment is essential for the successful conduct of elections.
The workshop brought together security agencies, local government chairmen, traditional rulers, civil society groups, political party officials and members of the media to deliberate on strategies for strengthening electoral security ahead of the 2027 general elections.
