Chukwuebuka Enekwechi delivered one of the defining moments of Team Nigeria’s athletics campaign on Thursday, winning a historic men’s shot put gold as several other Nigerian athletes kept the country’s medal push alive at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The African record holder threw 21.07m to edge New Zealand’s Tom Walsh and England’s Scott Lincoln, becoming the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games shot put title.
His victory capped another productive day for Team Nigeria as medals, finals and encouraging performances came from across the athletics programme.
Enekwechi Delivers the Breakthrough
Enekwechi arrived in Glasgow among the favourites and lived up to expectations with a composed series that ended in a landmark victory.
His gold also completed a memorable day for Nigerian throwing events.
Earlier, teenager Jessica Oji quietly made history of her own by claiming silver in the women’s shot put, becoming the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the event since 2006.
Later in the evening, attention shifted to Tobi Amusan, who settled for bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles after battling an injury.
The world record holder revealed afterwards that she competed despite suffering a fall before the championships.
“I’ve been dealing with the injury from the fall, but I wanted to come out here and give my best for Nigeria,” Amusan said after the race.
She added that she would now focus on recovery ahead of her remaining competitions.
This came after she dropped the fastest time ever run at the Commonwealth Games in the women’s 100mH, storming to victory in her heat in 12.19s (+3.8).
Although she missed out on a third consecutive Commonwealth title, her determination to finish on the podium added another medal to Nigeria’s growing tally.
More Positives Across the Track
Nigeria’s progress extended beyond the medal events.
Samuel Ogazi and Edidiong Udo safely negotiated their men’s 400m semifinals to qualify for Saturday’s final, keeping alive hopes of another podium finish in one of Nigeria’s strongest events.
In the decathlon, Jami Schlueter remained firmly in contention after another steady sequence of performances, sitting among the chasing pack behind Olympic champion Damian Warner as the competition entered its closing stages.
His consistency continued to underline Nigeria’s growing investment in the combined events.
Nigeria also featured in the velodrome, where its cyclists gained valuable championship experience against some of the Commonwealth’s strongest track cycling nations.
While the team narrowly missed the medal rounds, the performances reflected the steady progress of a programme still seeking its breakthrough on the continental stage.
With Enekwechi making history, Amusan showing resilience despite injury, and several athletes advancing to crucial finals, Thursday reinforced the depth of Nigeria’s challenge as the Games approach their final days.
