As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has congratulated Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, calling for renewed commitment to national unity, peace and prosperity.

Wamakko, a former governor of Sokoto State and senator representing Sokoto North Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the anniversary offered Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices and patriotism of the country’s founding fathers. His current Senate representation and party affiliation are listed by the National Assembly.

Nigeria is marking 66 years of independence on October 1, 2026, following its independence from British colonial rule in 1960.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Sokoto by his spokesperson, Bashar Abubakar, Wamakko said Nigerians should use the occasion to strengthen their collective resolve to build a peaceful, united and prosperous country, irrespective of ethnic, religious, regional or political differences.

He described the resilience, determination and diversity of Nigerians as some of the country’s greatest strengths, saying citizens had continued to demonstrate their capacity to overcome challenges and contribute to national development.

Wamakko urged Nigerians to promote tolerance, peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and understanding, stressing that sustainable national development requires the collective efforts of all citizens.

He also paid tribute to members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies, as well as Nigerians who had made sacrifices in defence of the country’s territorial integrity, peace and security.

The former Sokoto governor also congratulated the government and people of Sokoto State, traditional and religious leaders, as well as residents of Sokoto North Senatorial District.

He thanked them for their commitment to peace, unity and development and urged residents to sustain the values associated with the Sokoto Caliphate, including peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and concern for societal welfare.
