The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called for improved welfare for serving and retired military personnel, demanding timely pensions, accessible healthcare, decent housing and better equipment for troops.
Obi made the call in a message marking the burial of retired Lieutenant-General Isaac Obiakor in Awka, Anambra State, on Friday, following the deaths of soldiers in reported aircraft crashes and the demise of the former senior military officer.
The former Anambra State governor said the sacrifices of military personnel must be matched with practical support from the government, rather than being acknowledged only through ceremonies and tributes.
He said retired officers and soldiers deserved to live their post-service years in dignity, with access to healthcare, regular pension payments and decent accommodation.
Obi also urged the government to provide serving personnel with adequate equipment, proper training and effective medical care to enable them to carry out their duties safely.
“Patriotism must go beyond ceremonies and tributes. It must be reflected in the practical care we provide for those who serve and those who have served,” he said.
The former governor added that the country had a responsibility to protect the dignity and well-being of those who defend its territorial integrity.
He said the families of retired personnel should be assured that their loved ones’ sacrifices had not been forgotten.
Obi also expressed condolences to the families of military personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of Obiakor, comfort for his family and protection for serving members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
