Adamawa: Institute introduces new indigenous African alphabets

A Yola -based Media and Language Training Institute, Konngol Silver-tongue Communication, said that it has introduced a new set of indigenously African alphabets.
The President and Chief Executive Officer of the institute, Prof. Abubakar Abba-Tahir, announced the development during the graduation ceremony of the institute’s first set of students of the new alphabets.
Abba-Tahir, also the Vice President of the American University of Nigeria, Yola, said that the new script was developed in Fulfulde language with 28 alphabets.
He said that the achievement was a milestone in preserving Africa’s indigenous language from extinction.
“The new script which is neither Arabic or English alphabets is taught in some Centres in three local government areas of Adamawa, which comprises Jada, Fufore and Yola South.
“The new script, will help the African indigenous languages improve and express their significance.” Abba-Tahir said.
Abba-Tahir said that in the new script, there were alphabets that could not be found in either English or Arabic.
He confirmed that the script was approved by UNESCO to be taught round the World, adding that the script could be written and communicated in any language like the English alphabets.
The linguist said that Adamawa was the first state to adopt teaching of the new script in Nigeria and it had yield positive results.
He explained that the institute was making gigantic efforts to expand the teaching of the new script to other areas of the state and beyond.
Abba-Tahir said that many prominent personalities in and outside Nigeria, including some senior linguistic professors from various universities, had shown interest in partnering with the institute on expanding the new development.
The linguist urged his other indigenous African counterparts to wake up from slumber, and developed their own script for the development of the colorful cultural heritage of the continent.
