The crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has worsened with the defection of former lawmaker, Ishaku Abbo, to the Labour Party (LP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abbo, who represented Adamawa North Senatorial District in the 9th National Assembly, announced his resignation from the ADC in a statement issued on Sunday.
He attributed his decision to the protracted leadership crisis within the party, citing conflicting court rulings at both national and state levels which, according to him, have created uncertainty among members.
The former senator noted that recent judgments by the Federal High Court and the Supreme Court on the party’s leadership dispute have further complicated the situation.
He disclosed that he has moved to the Labour Party alongside members of his political structure, known as the SIA Movement, in preparation for the 2027 elections.
Abbo maintained that his exit was not borne out of hostility towards the ADC but driven by the need to pursue his political ambitions and those of his supporters.
He also appealed to party loyalists who may be displeased with his decision to forgive him, stressing that he still holds respect for his former associates in the ADC.
The ex-lawmaker further hinted that he would soon unveil his preferred presidential candidate in consultation with his new party.
The defection adds to the growing list of high-profile exits from the ADC amid ongoing internal disputes and political realignments ahead of 2027.
