Air Force personnel raid Bureau de change, offices at Lagos airport

Date:

From Suleiman Idris, Lagos

In what appears like a commando-like raid Wednesday at the international wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos, officers and men of the Nigeria Air Force attached to the terminal raided Bureau-de-change operators, passengers alongside their friends and relatives and concessionaire at both departure and arrival halls of the terminal.

The heavily-armed team, led by the Airport Commandant, Group Captain Victor Ajiboye caused disruption in most operations at the airport, which users described as sad.

Our reporter reported that the military were informed of a serious security breach prompting their swift response to arrest the situation.

Staff of the airport authority security arms AVSEC, the custom, immigration and the police told journalists they were amazed that such exercise could be carried out without their knowledge.

Meanwhile, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria FAAN) has criticised the raid, which it says is a violation of its clients carrying out legitimate businesses at the MMIA.

An official, who does not want his name in print, told our correspondent the authority will take the military on the issue.

Offices raided include: Sulah Bureau-de-change, Kings Bureau De change, Leader Investment Company Limited, Westgate Pharmacy, Vida Sem, EddyBurger Eatery, Kilimanjaro Eatery , Global Link Mini market and Famous Link.
