According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday June 4, 2026, the Super Eagles camp in Portugal has received a major boost with the arrival of Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi ahead of their international friendly against Portugal, while head coach Éric Chelle has also handed a late call-up to a new left-back.

Iwobi, who has amassed 99 senior appearances for the Nigeria national football team, is now on the verge of joining the exclusive list of Nigerian players to reach 100 international caps. He joins legends such as Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, and Ahmed Musa in the country’s centurions club.

There had been earlier uncertainty regarding his availability following disciplinary concerns from a previous international match, but the midfielder has now linked up with the squad in Portugal ahead of the high-profile friendly.

Meanwhile, Chelle has strengthened his defensive options with the late addition of 21-year-old left-back Christian Akpan. The defender, who recently made his senior debut for Genk, has been called up due to his versatility and ability to operate across multiple defensive roles, including both full-back positions and defensive midfield.

Akpan has already arrived in Lisbon and is expected to take part in the team’s upcoming training sessions as preparations intensify.

The Super Eagles are also set to welcome additional reinforcements, with Samuel Chukwueze expected to join the camp later in the week to further boost attacking options.

The squad currently consists of a mix of experienced internationals and emerging talents as Chelle continues to assess his options ahead of the friendly against Portugal.

Nigeria will face the Portuguese national team on June 10 in what is expected to be a high-level test for the Super Eagles as they continue preparations for future competitive fixtures.
