The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that its counsel, Larry Peters Aso, was misquoted regarding his response to a judgment in a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by legal practitioner Dr. Ted Iseghohi-Edwards.
Justice Suleiman Belgore of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court reportedly cleared Iseghohi-Edwards of alleged fraud concerning legal services rendered to Nigeria’s 774 local government councils and disagreed with the agency’s investigation findings on the London-Paris Club refunds.
In a statement issued on Monday by the EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the commission stated that Aso simply thanked the judge for his industry and indicated that the EFCC would apply for a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment to determine its next legal steps.
The EFCC denied reports claiming Aso made statements referencing an “EFCC 2024 report” or suggesting that investigation findings were influenced by pressure from higher authorities following the assignment of promissory notes to third parties in the United States.
“This framing was intended to insinuate extraneous influences on the matter which never existed,” the statement read, adding that the official record of court proceedings from Tuesday, October 20, 2026, confirms the counsel’s actual remarks.
The commission urged media organizations to maintain objectivity and accuracy when reporting judicial proceedings in the interest of justice.
