Army Headquarters Sensitises Imo Youths on Recruitment, Urges Greater South-East Participation

The Nigerian Army has intensified efforts to boost enlistment from the South-East, as a delegation from Army Headquarters visited Owerri on April 13, 2026, for a sensitisation campaign ahead of the 91 Regular Recruit Intake.

The outreach programme, held at the palace of the Eze Imo, brought together key stakeholders to discuss the recruitment process and the need for increased participation of youths from the region.

Speaking during the event, the team leader, Brigadier General UC Nnabuihe, delivered a goodwill message on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu. He announced that the recruitment portal, which opened on March 30, 2026, will close on May 17, 2026, noting that the Army aims to recruit about 14,000 personnel nationwide.

Nnabuihe urged eligible youths from the South-East to take advantage of the opportunity, highlighting benefits such as career development, educational advancement, and national service. He also expressed concern over the region’s low enlistment rate compared to other parts of the country, stressing the need to bridge the gap.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, His Royal Majesty Dr Emmanuel C. Okere, commended the initiative and assured the delegation of efforts to mobilise youths across the state. He, however, appealed for fairness and transparency in the screening process.

The event featured an interactive session where stakeholders raised questions and received clarifications on recruitment procedures. Army representatives reiterated their commitment to a transparent and merit-based selection process.

Participants at the meeting included traditional rulers, town union representatives, youth leaders, and heads of vigilante groups. The delegation comprised Brigadier General UC Nnabuihe, Lieutenant Colonel AO Osawe, and Major AA Agbo.

Highlights of the visit included a detailed presentation on the recruitment process, the presentation of recruitment materials to the Eze Imo, and a group photograph.

Earlier, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Headquarters of the 34 Artillery Brigade in Obinze, where they were received on behalf of the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General A. Ahmed, by the Chief of Staff, Lieutenant Colonel A. Jir.

The sensitisation campaign reflects the Nigerian Army’s commitment to inclusivity, transparency, and equitable national representation in its recruitment process.
