Nigeria Police Record Breakthrough, Arrest 50 Suspects, Recover High-Grade Weapons Nationwide

Date:

The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on high-profile crimes, arresting 50 suspects linked to terrorism, kidnapping, and armed robbery across the country.

At a press briefing held on April 13, 2026, at the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) headquarters in Abuja, the police disclosed that the operation led to the recovery of a cache of sophisticated weapons, including an anti-aircraft launcher and 17 rifles.

The operations, carried out by the FID-IRT from January 2026 to date, targeted criminal syndicates responsible for various violent crimes. Items recovered during the operations include 17 rifles, one anti-aircraft launcher, 111 rounds of live ammunition, 17 live cartridges, five walkie-talkie communication devices, nine magazines, three mobile phones, and one Golf vehicle.

Among the key achievements was the dismantling of a 33-member gang involved in terrorism, cattle rustling, and the attack on the Christ Apostolic Church in Kwara State. The police also arrested suspects linked to the killing of three officers attached to the Donga Divisional Headquarters in Taraba State.

In the Federal Capital Territory and neighboring states, the police apprehended suspects involved in “one-chance” abductions, car burglaries, and the operation of illegal police checkpoints, leading to the recovery of stolen items and operational tools.

In a related development, operatives acting on intelligence arrested a 25-year-old suspect, Nasiru Ibrahim, in the Igumale area of Benue State. He was found in possession of an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and eight rounds of live ammunition.

Investigations revealed that the weapon was allegedly supplied by a notorious bandit identified as Janari, who remains at large.
Police authorities said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and dismantle the remaining members of the syndicate.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to national security, stating that the achievements reflect the dedication of the police to combating crime and ensuring justice. He added that several suspects are ready for prosecution, while investigations continue to track down other accomplices and recover more illegal arms.

The Force reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding citizens through the deployment of both human and technological intelligence.
