The Rotary Club, Asokoro, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), through its micro finance scheme has disbursed cash to some women at Wumba village, Abuja, aimed at empowering them to contribute towards the economic development of the society.
According to the Club secretary and Coordinator of the micro-finance, Frances Bekey, the scheme which started with 30 members and has grown to over a hundred in FCT, would encourage the women to enlarge their businesses and contribute not only to their families but to the society at large.
Bekey disclosed that the Rotary Club of Asokoro has long outstanding records of empowering women in FCT, because they are at the fore front of the house hold and are managers of every family.
She therefore advised the women to use the money given to them wisely to advance their business, and ensure that they don’t disappoint the club by not using it in the business they were advised to use it for.
“Our concern is to empower women as the saying goes; if you empower a woman, you have empowered a nation” she said.
Also, the director of international service of the Club, Nikky Uchime, said a total number of 20 women were selected to participate in the micro Finance scheme. After series of training, 16 were selected and 9 persons were given cash.
“Our coming to Wumba village is another achievement of the Rotary Club of Asokoro, in its efforts to empower women through this king of humanitarian gesture.
“Rotary doesn’t give money by proxy; they will have to wait for next time. But my prayer for them is that by this micro finance, they will grow their businesses” Uchime added.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Chidinma Uche, said it is a good thing that the Club has come to identify with them.
“A lot of women are looking for such opportunity to grow their business. This is really encouraging because what we have received today will boost of business,” she said.
She therefore called on all Nigerians with kind minds, to support what Rotary is doing to empower women in the society.
