Baba-Ahmed Denies Declaring Presidential Ambition

Date:

The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, has dismissed reports suggesting that he recently announced plans to contest the presidency.

Speaking on Channels Television on Friday, Baba-Ahmed said his comments had been misinterpreted and did not amount to a declaration of presidential ambition.
“I never declared to contest the presidency two days ago,” he stated.

According to him, his remarks were only meant to reaffirm his continued membership of the Labour Party. He explained that while future political possibilities cannot be completely ruled out, he has not made any decision or formal announcement regarding a presidential bid.

His clarification followed widespread media and social media reports claiming that he was preparing to run for president in the next general election, a development that generated discussions among supporters and political observers.

Providing further explanation, Baba-Ahmed said, “Two days ago, what I did was simply say that I remain in the Labour Party. I never declared to contest the presidency, even though there could be a possibility of that happening. I reiterated my membership of the Labour Party, and that is all.”

He added that any declaration of interest would only be made in line with the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the internal processes of the Labour Party.

“The submission I made was that one will have to wait for the INEC timetable and for the party to make the call for people to indicate their interest. I did not declare,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed also criticised the spread of misinformation, particularly on social media, and urged professional media organisations to ensure proper verification before publishing reports.

“It is unfortunate that social media can be so sensational, putting out wrong narratives to emotional listeners. I believe formal media should serve as filters and barriers so that the general public can always consume the correct information,” he added.
