Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State has written to the state house of Assembly to seek amendment of local Government laws (CAP L8 laws) and the Sule Lamido University law, No 6 passed by the Assembly.
The letter was read by the Speaker, Jigawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Idrith Garba, during plenary on Thursday.
The local Government law, CAP L8 laws 2012 of Jigawa State was enacted by the previous administration, under former Governor Sule Lamido, which ordered for deductions from the statutory allocation of all the local Governments councils.
The deductions include 15% contributions to the Local Government pension funds and 5% contributions to the Emirate councils.
Others include 1% Training fund contribution to local government service commission, 1% contribution to the office of the Auditor General for Local Government and the Ministry for Local Government as well as 2% contributions for Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa.
While briefing newsmen over the laws, Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar described it as unjust law enacted by the previous administration.
He said “I inherited the laws and I believe it is an unjust law to the local governments. For so many months the local governments defaulted to make some of these contributions because they don’t have the money.
“Due to the fall of oil price, the local governments could not make some of these contributions, even last month we borrowed them over N250m to settle their problems. I am not happy to see that as a Governor we are forcing local governments to do what they cannot or what is not their responsibility”, the Governor stated.
