The Benue State Government has sternly warned that it would not condone cultism, extortion and other forms of criminality in the State.
Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Security and Internal Affairs, Chief Joseph Har gave this warning on Friday during a sensitization tour of Makurdi, the State capital.
The tour had the Adviser go to markets including, modern market, Wadata and North bank as well as other flash points with the State security outfits, Benue Livestocks Guards, Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Services and Benue State Community Volunteers Guards and Benue Community Vigilante group.
Chief Har explained that the campaign is part of the non kinetic approach (stick approach)embarked upon by the Alia administration to.ensure peace in the State.
He enjoined human right groups in the State and country to lend their voice to the State to ensure that it is rid off cults and criminals.
The Security Adviser who frowned at forceful extortion in form of marching ground carried out by some elements, averred that the act is inimical to development as it has caused a dent on the image of the State, adding ‘it chases away investors from the State.
“These acts are hereby banned. If they agree, there will be peace, else we will take the battle to their homes Peace is not a sign of weakness. We have the capacity to deal ruthlessly and decisively with anyone who flouts the law. We will prosecute them according to the law.”
On his part, the traditional Chief in charge of Makurdi, Ter Makurdi Chief Vincent Ahule distanced his stool from the acts especially marching ground, decrying that it has caused embarrassment to the State.
“Anything that is for peace, we give our royal support to it “, the Chief said.
