The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended its impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, following high-level intervention by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The decision was taken during a plenary session in Port Harcourt on Thursday, where lawmakers moved a motion to formally halt the impeachment process. The Assembly said the move was in line with resolutions reached during recent reconciliation meetings in Abuja and was intended to restore calm in the state.

For months, Rivers State has been gripped by a tense political standoff, but the Presidency’s intervention appears to have de-escalated the crisis. Assembly leaders noted that continuing with the impeachment process could have further threatened peace and stability in the state.

The development follows a series of reconciliation efforts led by President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, aimed at resolving the power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, former governor Nyesom Wike. The political rift had previously stalled legislative activities and deepened divisions within the state’s political structure.

Earlier this year, the Assembly had served the governor with a notice of gross misconduct, pushing the state into a major political crisis. However, the truce reached in Abuja has now paved the way for a temporary political settlement.

In a related move, Governor Fubara recently dissolved the State Executive Council, a step widely seen as part of the broader agreement to accommodate various political interests in the formation of a new cabinet.
