The Benue State University(BSU), Makurdi, on Monday, slammed immediate suspension on the 200-600 medical students of college of health sciences of the Institution following their recent involvement in a peaceful demonstration to Government House Makurdi.
The medical students had on 25th October, 2023, staged a peaceful protest to government house Makurdi to seek for an interface with the State Governor, Hyacinth Alia in order to make their demands concerning the poor condition of their hotel accommodations and other dilapidated infrastructures at the college.
However, the University management seen this action as an offense and embarrassment to the institution and therefore decided to slammed suspension on the students and banned the college association’s activities.
The Registrar of the University, Mrs. Mfaga Modom who announced the suspension of the medical students in a statement she personally signed and made available to newsmen in Makurdi, also directed the immediate suspension of University Medical Students Association (BSUMSA) till further notice and directed all the affected 200-600 level medical students to vacate their hotels by 10am on Monday 30th October, 2023.
She said the suspension would last for a period of one(1) month, from 30th October, 2023 to 29th November, 2023, while academic activities of 100 level students of the college of Health Science remain uninterrupted.
Mrs. Modom disclosed that on resumption, each of the affected students will bring a sworn affidavit from a competent court of law attesting to be of good conduct and also come along with his or her parent/guardian who will sign an undertaking.
The statement read in part: “Management committee has reviewed the recent actions of 200-600 medical students and has also carefully reviewed the reports from the Dean Students, the Security Coordinator, management committee and ASUU of Health Science regarding the students demonstration of Wednesday 25th October, 2023.
“The management noted with dismay the recalcitrant attitude of these students before, during and after the demonstration and resolved as follows;
“Management committee will constitute an investigation committee to look into the remote and immediate causes of the demonstration and advise appropriate.”
