An Oshodi Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, yesterday remanded a bus conductor, Sunday Edeh, charged with conspiracy and stealing N20,000 from a motorist, in prison custody.
The Magistrate, Mr. Akeem Fashola, remanded Edeh, 24, in Kirikiri Prisons, Apapa after he admitted stealing the money.
Fashola adjourned the case till June 26 for facts and sentencing.
Edeh, of no fixed address, was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 23 at Oshodi Oworonsoki Expressway, Ilupeju, Lagos.
He said that the accused and others at large conspired to steal N20,000 from one Mr. Tunde Anjorin.
“The accused forcefully removed N20,000 from the pocket of the complainant,” Olatunde said.
He said that the complainant was driving his car in traffic when the accused approached him and demanded for money.
“The accused and others accosted the complainant, demanded money from him, and threatened to damage his car with stones and bottles if he refused to grant their demand,” he said.
According to the prosecutor, the complainant ignored them and continued driving his car.
“When they noticed that the complainant did not respond to their demand, they forcefully removed N20,000 from his front pocket and took to their heels.
“The complainant raised alarm shouting ‘thief ‘; the accused were pursued and one of them was apprehended, while the rest escaped with the money,” he said.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state, 2011.
Section 285 provides that if convicted of stealing, an accused is liable to three years imprisonment. (NAN)
