In a series of Christmas messages released by the National Director of Social Communications, Very Rev. Fr. Michael Nsikak Umoh, Catholic bishops across Nigeria have called on citizens and leaders to embrace hope, love, and unity as the nation navigates its myriad challenges.
Archbishop Augustine Akubeze of Benin City anchored his message on the theme “Hope Does Not Disappoint” (Romans 5:5).
Reflecting on the blessings and adversities of 2024, he urged the faithful to remain steadfast as they anticipate the Jubilee Year of Hope in 2025.
“Hope empowers us to navigate life’s trials,” he stated, calling on Christians to embody Christ’s light through acts of forgiveness and compassion, particularly for the marginalized and suffering.
From Abuja, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama highlighted the enduring message of redemption brought by Christ’s birth.
Amid Nigeria’s insecurity, poverty, and corruption, he emphasized servant leadership and urged citizens to act as “beacons of hope and agents of positive change.”
Mourning the tragic stampede at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, which claimed lives during a food distribution, he called for unity and collaborative solutions to prevent such incidents.
Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins of Lagos used his message to critique the adverse effects of government reforms on citizens, citing recent stampedes across the country as evidence of growing desperation.
He called for policies that prioritize immediate relief for the poor while ensuring sustainable development.
“Policies should uplift, not harm, those they are meant to serve,” he stated, advocating for investment in agriculture and job creation to combat hunger and poverty.
