The Coalition of National Civil Society Organisations (CNCSOs) and the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) have called on the Rivers State House of Assembly to immediately halt all impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The call was made on Wednesday in Abuja during a joint media briefing by the groups. Speaking on behalf of the coalition, its Chairman, Alhaji Baba Abubakar, said the intervention was driven by a “solemn patriotic duty” to defend constitutional democracy, protect the mandate of the people of Rivers State, and prevent what he described as a dangerous political precedent capable of threatening national peace.
According to the groups, the political developments in Rivers State go beyond local politics and represent a critical test of Nigeria’s commitment to constitutional governance, separation of powers, and democratic stability.
They argued that the governor has not committed any act that meets the constitutional threshold for impeachment, stressing that there are no credible allegations of gross misconduct, no paralysis of governance, and no popular demand for his removal.
“The weaponisation of the legislature poses a national danger. Let us be clear: the Governor of Rivers State has not committed any offence that warrants impeachment under the Constitution,” the coalition stated.
Beyond calling for the termination of the impeachment process, the CNPP and CNCSOs also demanded a probe into the conduct of members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. They called for a forensic audit of all funds received and expended during the emergency period in the state, full accountability of Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations during that time, and a high-level mediation process aimed at restoring constitutional order.
The groups further warned against what they described as the “weaponisation” of state legislatures across Nigeria, noting that such actions could undermine democratic institutions nationwide.
They also appealed directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to intervene urgently, describing the situation in Rivers State as a “national democratic emergency.”
“As President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and leader of the ruling party, you have both the constitutional authority and moral responsibility to halt this dangerous slide,” the coalition said, warning that failure to act could encourage similar crises in other states with grave consequences for national unity and peace.
The CNPP and CNCSOs concluded by cautioning that impeachment without just cause amounts to political banditry and poses a direct threat to Nigeria’s democracy, insisting that Governor Fubara should be allowed to carry out his mandate without undue interference.
