Confusion in Edo Assembly over gunshots

Date:

From Osaigbovo Iguobaro, Benin

Alleged sporadic gunshots within the precinct of Edo state House of Assembly Complex caused confusion yesterday at the King Square, Benin City, the state capital.

The atmosphere was said to have heightened tension from some suspected thugs loyal to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties, led by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It was not clear of who fired the volleys; but sources attributed it to an orderly attached to a serving legislator in the House, who attempted to hang his rifle which dropped on the floor and the bullet ricocheted.

However, another source said the gunshots may have been fired by some suspected armed thugs loitering around the complex to effect a leadership change in the House of Assembly in connection to the on-going leadership crises in the APC.

No life was lost in the incident; however, workers hastily closed their office windows and doors, chanting quick payers before the lawmakers adjourned sitting, which was attended by 12 legislators, out of the 24.

An eyewitness said: “We were just in our office when we heard the shot”.

Another eye witness said it is the police that shot but some said it is the thugs that have been at the House since Monday”.

Efforts to obtain comment from Edo State police commissioner, Mr. Foluso Adebanjo were unsuccessful, as calls put across to him went unanswered.
