Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has called on Nigerians to strengthen national unity, support security personnel and remain committed to peace as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Musa made the call on Sunday during an interdenominational church service at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, organised as part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary.
The service, themed “Anchored on Hope: The Path to Divine Stability and Shared Prosperity,” brought together senior government officials, security chiefs, members of the diplomatic community and Christian leaders.
According to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, the Defence Minister took the first scripture reading and stressed the importance of faith, peace and collective responsibility in strengthening national security.
“As we mark 66 years of our nationhood, our hope for a peaceful, secure and prosperous Nigeria remains unshakeable,” Musa said.
He described security as a foundation for national unity and economic prosperity, assuring Nigerians that the Armed Forces remained committed to protecting the country’s sovereignty and restoring peace across troubled areas.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolutely committed to safeguarding our sovereignty and restoring lasting peace across all regions,” he said.
Musa also urged Nigerians to support security personnel and work collectively towards building a peaceful and united country.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who attended the service alongside Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, offered prayers for the country and stressed the importance of harmony and collective efforts towards sustainable peace.
Akume, while delivering the vote of thanks, called for continued support for Nigeria’s democratic institutions and peaceful political participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“As we look toward the 2027 elections ahead, let us remember that democracy is sustained by peace and unity,” Akume said.
Other dignitaries at the service included Service Chiefs, members of the diplomatic corps and senior clerics.
The event ended with the ceremonial cutting of the 66th Independence Anniversary cake by the Defence Minister and other dignitaries.
