Lawmaker empowers 150 constituents

From Osakhare Erese, Asaba

The Delta State House of Assembly Speaker, Mr. Sheriff Oborevwori, has said the state legislature was yet to receive the transmitted copy of the proposed amendments of the constitution from the National Assembly, adding that the process to receiving the copy had in the recent times been difficult, though some states are already with their copies.
The Speaker, who disclosed this in Asaba to journalists while exchanging views, explained that the House would deliberate on the proposed amendments collectively with other stakeholders, stressing that the nation’s democracy would be strengthened by it.
While commending the journalists on their steadfastness to deepen the democratic principles, the speaker further disclosed that the Delta House of Assembly was not in any way against the amendments, but expressed concern that devolution of powers was most appropriate, and a fairer distribution of the nation’s resources.
He maintained that the House was also not against Local Government autonomy, adding that the proposed amendments should be looked at holistically, while restructuring should be considered; pointing out that the legislature was the foundation on which democracy was built, hence the advocacy to state legislatures in Nigeria to enlighten the people on the proposed amendments on the nation’s constitution.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Ika North East Constituency at the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Anthony Emeka Elekeokwuri, has empowered 150 constituents in the area.
The lawmaker, who gave cash sums to women and youths including paying the school fees of over 30 students, explained that he would continue to put smiles on the faces of his constituents, noting that the empowerment was to appreciate them for their continued support and to bring the dividends of democracy to the grass roots.
He urged the beneficiaries to remain committed to the party and maintain their unalloyed support for the State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, especially in the forthcoming Local Government Elections.
While calling on the beneficiaries to key into the numerous skills acquisition programmes of present administration, the lawmaker said that amidst paucity of fund, Dr. Okowa remained committed to advancing the cause of the people through meaningful and quality skills acquisition programmes in line with the SMART Agenda.
