The proponent of the proposed National Commission for the Coordination and Control of the Proliferation of Small Arms, Ammunitions, and Light Weapons (NATCOM), Dr. Baba Mohammed, has congratulated President Bola Tinubu on his re-election as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Chairman.

Peoples Daily reports that President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as the chairman of ECOWAS, about one year after he took over the leadership of the regional bloc.

The Nigerian leader, who rose to power in May 2023, was re-elected as the ECOWAS chairman during the 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government. The event took place at the Presidential Villa in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, on Sunday.

Dr. Baba, in a statement sent to Peoples Daily on Monday morning, said the re-election of Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu as chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for a second consecutive tenure is a step in the right direction.

He said, “The sixty-fifth session of the community held in Abuja saw Nigeria making a new commitment to incentivize the fight against terrorism in the ECOWAS sub-region with its counter-terrorism centre.

“Assenting to the NATCOM bill passed by the 9th assembly will no doubt assist the nation, the ECOWAS sub-region, and indeed Africa in checking the proliferation of small arms, ammunitions, and light weapons.

“This is largely because the NATCOM bill proposed by Dr. Baba Mohammed is in line with the ECOWAS convention of 2006, to which Nigeria is a signatory.”
