Yobe state government, under the directive of the State Governor, Alh.(Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, has constituted a committee on Ebola disease (EVD), to ensure the protection of people in the state.
The state Commissioner of Environment, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana disclosed this yesterday, at the inauguration of members of the committee drawn from the ministries of Environment, Water Resources, Information, Animal and Fisheries as well as Women Affairs among others.
He also said the action, according to the governor, is a quick response by the state government to the spread of the deadly virus which has claimed hundreds of lives in some West African countries, including Nigeria.
Speaking through Gubana, the governor said the present administration deems it necessary to ban the hunting, sale and consumption of bush meat in the state even as the governor promised to provide all necessary support for the committee to be able to protect the lives of Yobeans and ensure that the emergence of the disease does not hamper the pursuit of noble objectives of his administration in the health sector.
Gaidam therefore appealed to community leaders, hunters and members of the entire public to cooperate with the committee in the discharge of its duties.
The committee, which has four weeks to submit its report, has the commissioner of environment, Alh. Idi Barde Gubana as chairman, while other members include the state commissioner of health, Dr. Bello Kawuwa among others.
