Civil Empowerment & Rule of Law Support Initiative, CERLSI, a group working on elections sensitization in Nigeria has staged a walk tagged Keke Brigade Grassroots Participation Against Vote-Selling which took place on Saturday 18th November, 2023 in Benin City Edo state.
CERLSI Deputy Executive Director, Bob MajiriOghene Etemiku told journalists that the walk was carried out to sensitize Oko ADP residents in Benin City why they should avoid selling their votes in the coming elections in Edo state in 2024.
‘Vote selling among citizens has become a threat to free and fair elections in Nigeria. We all saw how it featured very prominently in the Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa elections in November 2023. Therefore, if Edo people must get a good governor in 2024, it is important that grassroots campaign against vote selling must begin now” Mr Etemiku said.
The walk was carried out with collaboration with Keke riders at the Oko-ADP junction off the Airport Road in Benin City. The walk began at the ADP Junction, through the Ogba Market, Aruogba and Irhirhi. ‘The Keke riders in Nigeria have now become true representatives of the masses of the Nigerian people. They are closer to the Nigerian people because of the day-to-day interactions they have with ferrying people from point A to point B. They are a crucial social and economic block, and that’s why we have conducted this sensitization walk with them’, Mr. Etemiku said.
