FAAN backtracks, says no fire incident at Lagos airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says there was no fire at terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, clarifying an earlier advisory that reported a fire incident at the facility.
FAAN had earlier said that fire engulfed a part of the terminal, adding that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) was responding to the incident and that there were no casualties or loss of life.
However, in an updated statement, the authority said preliminary findings indicated that the incident was not a fire outbreak.
“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated,” the statement reads.
“Normal operations have since resumed at the terminal, while detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.”
The authority thanked passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation, and reiterated its commitment to the safety and security of all airport operations.
The incident comes about five months after a fire outbreak at terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on February 23.
