FCT: GSS Anagada launches “War Against Drug Abuse” club

The management of the Government Secondary School Anagada in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Tuesday launched War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) club in the school.

In her address at the occasion, the Principal of the school, Hajiya Mariya Yusuf Bala said: “The operations of the club will be geared towards making a strong relationship with home to train the students early against drug abuse”.

She said: “The exact cause of substance abuse is not clear, but there are two predominant theories either a genetic predisposition or a habit learned from others, which if additional develops, manifests itself as a chronic debilitating disease”.

She emphasized that home was the bedrock of every child’s growth and development, while calling on the parents, guardians as well as the religious leaders to play important roles in upbringing of their children at home.

This, she said: “The family should liaise with the school to nib in the bud any trace of drug misuse”, pointing out that the students would be enlightened enough to dislike the use of drugs in later life.

Also speaking, the Village Head of Anagada, Alhaji Alhassan Musa who was represented by the School Based Management Committee (SBMC) advised the students to shun drug abuse of any kind.

On his part, the convener of the programme, Mr Mukhtar Yakubu, who is also the author the book entitled “Drug Abuse and Illict Sex, the disease of 21st century   said he would continue to partner with the FCT Secondary Education Board to launch “WADA” clubs in order to arrest the problem of drug abuse in schools.

Yakubu disclosed that the FCT Education Resource Centre (ERC) had recommended his book to be used in all libraries in the territory.

However, the official from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) presented a paper entitled: “The Dangers of Drug Abuse, Protection and Importance of Joining WADA Clubs”.
