Following high commendation from the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for its urban greening efforts, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has unveiled ambitious plans to remodel the abandoned Life Camp Recreational Park while anchoring a new end-of-year tradition for the nation’s capital.
Conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the neglected park along Jeremiah Useni Way on Monday, FCT Minister, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike declared that the site will undergo an emergency one-year transformation into a world-class leisure hub.
The move comes on the heels of the FCTA receiving a Certificate of Commendation under the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Green Area Initiative an award the Minister noted has energized the administration to expand Abuja’s public spaces and establish top-tier community gathering points.
As part of this broader push to position Abuja alongside major global capitals, Wike announced that the newly upgraded Abuja City Gate will become the centerpiece of the FCT’s official New Year’s Eve celebrations, hosting an annual public countdown and world-class fireworks display.
Highlighting the vision behind the projects,Wike emphasized that restoring urban green spaces is integral to improving the quality of life for residents and building iconic civic landmarks.
“You are aware today that the First Lady of the Federation has given a commendation to the FCT Administration for keying into the Renewed Hope initiative’s green area challenges.
“We promised her today that this award will motivate us…
“ To showcase that we are serious about it, I promised that we are going to turn around the recreation center at Life Camp which has been abandoned,” Wike stated.
To ensure the highest standard of execution, the acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, has been directed to invite leading construction firms, including Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, to present competitive, state-of-the-art designs.
Once completed, the remodeled Life Camp Park will feature modern sporting, fitness, and relaxation facilities designed to accommodate family outings, daily exercise, and eco-friendly recreation.
Combined with the planned New Year’s Eve countdown spectacle at the City Gate, the FCTA’s latest initiatives signal a major shift toward enriching the social, recreational, and festive fabric of Nigeria’s capital city.
