The Federal Government has suspended the proposed review of registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), pending broader stakeholder consultations.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo.
According to the statement, the Ministry has withdrawn its June 18, 2026, circular that communicated the proposed fee adjustment in order to allow for a comprehensive review and wider engagement with key stakeholders before any final decision is made.
Boriowo explained that the suspension followed concerns and constructive feedback from members of the public regarding the proposed increase in examination registration fees.
She noted that the proposed review was initially prompted by prevailing economic realities and the rising cost of administering credible national examinations. According to her, increasing expenses associated with logistics, security, printing of examination materials, technology deployment, quality assurance, and other essential operational services informed the proposal.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has directed that the planned fee review be placed on hold, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive, transparent, and evidence-based policymaking.
As part of the review process, the Ministry will consult with examination bodies, state ministries of education, school proprietors and administrators, parents’ associations, organised labour, and other relevant education stakeholders.
“The proposed review of examination registration fees will not take effect, as earlier communicated, pending the conclusion of the consultation process,” Boriowo stated.
She reiterated that the welfare of students, equitable access to quality education, and responsible policy decisions remain at the heart of the Federal Government’s education agenda.
Boriowo also thanked Nigerians for their understanding, patience, and continued support, assuring that the public would be kept informed throughout the consultation process.
