Suspected bandits ambushed and killed five police officers along the Sokoto-Gusau highway on Sunday during a special duty deployment.

The officers were traveling from Sokoto State to neighboring Zamfara State in a commercial mass transit bus when heavily armed gunmen intercepted their vehicle along the border corridor connecting both states and opened fire at close range, killing all five personnel on the spot.

The Public Relations Officer for the Zone 10 Police Headquarters in Sokoto, DSP Abdullahi Faruk, confirmed the fatalities during a telephone interview on Monday.

Faruk stated that the remains of the slain officers have been deposited at the morgue of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, adding that a comprehensive statement on the incident will be issued in due course.
